Learning Beyond the Classroom
Camps & Adventures
Our Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programme is packed with unforgettable experiences that build character, confidence, and connection. Mackenzie College students enjoy a variety of local and national camps designed to challenge and inspire. From the Year 7 & 8 Bannockburn adventure and the Year 9 Abel Tasman expedition to the Spirit of Adventure voyage and senior leadership camps, each experience is carefully crafted to grow resilience and teamwork. Curriculum-linked trips further extend learning in the real world—whether it’s exploring Queenstown for Geography, kayaking at Kakanui for PE, or engaging with Science at Portobello. These adventures leave lasting memories and lifelong lessons.
Camps That Build Character
We are proud of the diverse range of Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) camps we offer at Mackenzie College. These experiences create lasting memories and help shape confident, well-rounded individuals who are ready to take on life’s challenges. Our current programme includes:
- Year 7 & 8 – Te Ara Day Out, Bannockburn
- Year 9 – Abel Tasman
- Year 10 – Mt Somers & The Spirit of Adventure (by application)
- 3DLE – Often includes an overnight camp
- Year 12 & 13 – Senior Outdoor Education and Leadership Camp at Lindisfarne

Learning Beyond the Classroom
In addition to our camp schedule, students take part in curriculum-linked field trips that deepen their learning and real-world understanding. These include visits and experiences such as: Agribusiness field trips, Agrilearn in Timaru, Geography in Queenstown, History in Akaroa, and the Aoraki Maths Competition. Other experiences include Outdoor Education adventures, Science trips to Portobello and Rocky Shore, Physical Education kayaking in Kakanui, Social Science at Model EU and Aoraki Mt Cook, and Technology competitions like EPro8. These hands-on learning opportunities help bring the curriculum to life.
