Arts & Culture

Creative Expression with Community Impact

The arts are alive and well at Mackenzie College, where music, performance, and kapa haka play a central role in student life. Our itinerant music programme and performing arts events give students the chance to shine on stage, from the Young Performers’ Concert to the Lip Sync Battle. The house singing competition adds excitement and school spirit, while our kapa haka group proudly promotes te reo Māori and tikanga Māori both within the school and in the wider community. The school haka, Puia!, composed especially for Mackenzie College, is performed at formal events and welcomes. The arts not only inspire creativity—they build confidence, connection, and cultural pride.

PERFORMING ARTS AND MUSIC

The performing arts are strongly supported by our students with many students currently engaged in musical instrument lessons through the itinerant music programme.

Students are able to showcase their talents throughout the year in performances such as our annual young performers’ concert and the musical roadshow. Whole school musical events include the house singing competition (where the four houses battle for house points), and the iconic lip sync battle.

KAPA HAKA

Our kapa haka group is active in promoting te reo Māori (the language) and tikanga Māori (the protocols) in the College and across our community.

Our haka, ‘Puia!’, has been composed and choreographed for the College by Awatea Edwin. It is used in ceremonies throughout the year including the welcoming of manuhiri, or visitors, to our school during the traditional mihi whakatau or powhiri.
