Kia ora koutou katoa
The start of the year is fast approaching and I would like to extend a warm welcome back to our existing families and a special greeting to the new students and their whānau joining our school community in 2024.
NCEA
2023 NCEA results are out, and once again, our students have achieved remarkably well. We congratulate each of our students for their achievements. We will be celebrating the success of our students at our first full school assembly that follows the Powhiri.
Congratulations
A special shout-out to Jess Ryall and Gracie Hellmrich for winning Gold at the U18 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships in Bulgaria over the break. Gracie was captain of this side, too. We are incredibly proud of both of these students and we will celebrate their success accordingly when school returns. Well done!
Growing School
We are pleased to announce that our school roll is set to significantly increase in 2024. This year, we welcome forty new Year 7 students, along with eight other student additions to various year groups. Our school roll will be up 35 students on our 2023 numbers!
Staffing
We are very fortunate to have no changes to our staff in 2024. However, we would like to inform you that we will be advertising for a maternity leave art position for Term 2-4, as Rachel Thompson takes maternity leave.
Cell Phone Policy
In alignment with the recent government changes. We are well-prepared for this change, making only minor tweaks to our current policy for the beginning of term 2. The attached document outlines the details of our current policy, and our Board will communicate any refinements after our first meeting in February, to ensure we are working in line with the government legislation.
School Jackets Update
A friendly reminder that beginning in 2024, it will be compulsory for our students to wear a Mackenzie College embroidered black jacket. This includes both the new jacket and the old CCC jacket. No logoed black jackets other than those specified will be permitted.
Subject changes
We are excited about some changes to the courses offered this year. Financial literacy and career education have been added to the junior options through a future skills course for Years 7-10. Additionally, our collaboration with Geraldine High School Primary Industry Academy in the senior school will also be a significant advantage for our senior students.
Leadership Camp
A reminder from Mr. Smith that we have our senior leadership camp from the 30th of January to the 1st of February at Lindisfarne. Students attending this camp should have had an email from Mr. Smith at the end of last year, all students who applied for leadership roles for 2024 + year 13s should be attending. If you have not seen an email from Mr. Smith or completed the Google form to confirm attendance, please send Mr. Smith an email at ethans@mackcollege.school.nz
